I've been just recently introduced by a friend of mine to TOTO concert's recording in Paris and Jeff's DVD drumming instruction. But that's enough to convince me how Jeff Porcaro had influenced the music and drum world until now. His passion and aura will never be forgotten. I think noone can play such phenomenal like Jeff. His shuffle, his creativities, and his chops can never be equalized by noone. Jeff Porcaro has been my inspiration, personally, and most of drummers in the world, and he deserves it. Like Papa Joe said, Jeff is not just a drummer, but he is an artist of drum. Jeff Porcaro forever!!!

I never missed a uk tour date of "the boys" since 1982. Seeing Jeff rocking away, being in the zone was always a sight to behold. So gutting when he passed away, and even though hes gone from this earth, with 3 studio albums and one soon to be released his presence will always be there, alive in the music I imagine him looking down, smiling and being pleased, real pleased. God bless you Jeff.

My band (The Crew) was supposed to open for Toto in Minot, North Dakota. However, when we arrived to play, Toto's manager cancelled us on the spot, because "the boys have to get back to LA". We were bummed. Sitting in the stands waiting for Toto, my drummer said, "There's Jeff!". So we went down to talk to him. He asked, "Why we weren't playing?" When we told him, he actually seemed mad. "You guys should've played!" It was nice to hear him root for the little guy.

Hi there, my name is Jon-C. (from France)
Having myself worked drums during years, Jeff was (and IS forever!) according to my ears a drummer of exception, so talentued, a great musician playing his instrument in a remarkable and unique way, always reaching the main part, mixing acuteness and energy for the best, the tempo in the soul, he is a real source of inspiration for many drummers all over the world, it's truly difficult to express by words the feeling emanating from Jeff's talent, I think it's better to listen to the artist to understand and hear the magic of his work, the numerous sessions on Toto's albums and all the others!!!
Jeff, wherever you are, I send you my Love and bless you brother, I know that you receive me from the other side.

Your light shines on us!

For a number of years I hadn't really heard any songs from the 80's or 70's except from time to time. In the last year, I made a new fellow musician friend who loved 80's like me and both of us love Toto. This friend happened to have a DVD of Toto (can't remember where they were playing) and we watched it on the "big screen" and "surround sound" - it was FABULOUS! The music of Toto, w/Jeff playing drums, and the rest of the group playing together is the "tightest", most "uncanny" sounding band with the most "unique" sounds I have ever heard. It was a joy to sit back and look at the lights, watch the passion of each member of the band, and listen to the sounds of Toto music after all these years. Once again, I am a Toto fan all over again!

In 1982 I was blown away by the first sound on Toto IV which was that explosive intro on Rosanna, still my favourite opening to any track. After that no other drummer came close to his tight perfection and still doesn't. How sad that I might only get to here new stuff for another 10yrs.

JAlthough I'm not a drummer and more of a guitarist so to speak (and probabaly the biggest anonymous fan of Luke's), I must admit that Jeff's way of playing has always moved me, to say the least. Jeff had the ability to touch one's heart and soul; his music conveyed so much of by his own personnality that Jeff became your soulmate without even knowing him . Very few artists (whatever their art is) have this ability, it's something uncanny that cannot be explained. Yes, indeed, Jeff looks at us from the Heavens above, but after all that is where he always belonged, we must be grateful for having him with us even if it was for such a short while...I miss him so badly though...

Jeff had the GREATEST chops I ever heard. To immulate Jeff would be paradise. I saw TOTO in Atlanta in the early 80's the bad rocked. But for me(a drummer) 1 musician was on the stage and that was Jeff. RIP Jeff and may you rock the heavens as you did on earth.

Jeff Porcaro was one of my cousins. Even though he died when I was only 2 years old, I still feel like he was very close to me. It was a sad lost to the family. I just hope that all of you guys (and girls) out there understand that he was honestly one of ( or the only )greatest drummers ever to walk this earth.

I think Jeff was one of the greatest drummers. He could play figures on the drums, that nobody else can. I look up on him and I try to play his figures on the drum set when I play with my band.
Rest in Peace!

Jeff it was you alone who inspired me to be the best drummer that I ever could, even at the tender age of 11 years in New Zealand, on the other side of the world. I played along to the first Toto album over and over headphones on in a room lite by a red light bulb pretending that I was you live in concert in some big city in the northern thousands of screaming fans..and I still do today. I hope that one day I'll be able to truely keep up with you.....and even though I feel I have finally become a drummer at 38 years I know I'll never be anywhere near as good as you, people say to me "God you're good, who taught you to play the drums..and I always reply Jeff Porcaro.. You keep me going even today..still striving to be like you.......thank you so very much.......God Bless you....Rest in Peace.

Caro Jeff,
GRAZIE JEFFREY!! CIAO

Let me begin by saying that I have been a fan of the band since its beginning .I remember the first time i heard 'Hold the Line' and remember hearing the tricky footwork on the kick drum during the outro of the song and since that day have been a fan of Jeff's drumming. I have always been impressed with the Toto 'groove' that Jeff seemed to lay down effortlessly . I had the pleasure of seeing Toto play in Toronto,Canada during their 'Seventh One' tour and was completely blown away by Jeff's command of the drums. What I saw and heard at that show has stuck with me to this day . Words like ...taste ...finesse ...brilliance ...impeccable...are a few that come to mind. I remember how I litterally jumped to my feet and cheered when Jeff started the night laying down his unforgettable groove for Rosanna ... and the show just got better after each song (Home of the Brave was a complete mind blower !!!)As a fan of any musician or band that you love ,when there is a tragic loss such as in the case of Jeff's, there is a void that is never filled. I can only imagine the sense of loss suffered by his family and all the members in the band as well as the countless musicians and friends that Jeff had contributed to by way of his remarkable drumming talents . I had the pleasure of seeing the band again in Orillia Ontario,Canada at the Casino this summer and was so happy to see you guys still going strong .And Mr Simon Philips was indeed a pleasure to see and hear live . But even at that show my mind went back to that summer in Toronto in 87' and the memories of that show brought even a bigger smile to my face . Thanks for all the great songs guys and as a fan of Toto I look forward to all your releases . Jeff you are sadly missed by all but you will never be forgotten. (oct 15/05)

Besides being a drummer from 8 yrs old on, and touring as one years ago, I practiced my rock and shuffle chops in the 70's and 80's to many of Jeff's recordings, with TOTO, Boz Scaggs and so many others. He was my idol. Then, while working as a recording asst at A&M Studios in 1989, I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff, running special music errands for him around Hollywood and listening to him record with Michael McDonald, Bruce and others! He was a kind, humble, genuine person. I was shocked and saddened at his untimely passing and am so grateful that he graced the music industry, his family and friends, and those of us in awe, with his life and musicianship. Bless you Jeff!! (and live on TOTO.)

Was listening to some old Toto songs the other night and realized what a great contribution Jeff made to the group. Like many others' comments out here, his intricate drumming was and (still is) the "voice" of Toto, one of the best bands of all time. His love of music shines through in every song. You can have your rap and hip-hop; give me Toto's intricate rhapsodies every time!

Jeff, you are truly one of the best drummer I have ever heard, and happened to be the drummer of one of the best band I have ever enjoyed listening to. You were not only a drummer, but a real musician with all its meanings. You offered your sticks and talent to the greatest artists in the music industry, and played for yourself with exactly the same energy. You did not hit the drums only, you wrote music as well. Hey, you cowrote the major hit "Africa" that maybe 90% of the people on the planet love and hear almost once a day on the radio. And you also cowrote the very sophisticated jazz-rock-fusion "Jake To The Bone" every musician on this earth fantasizes about. Jeff we love you so deeply and feel desperate that you left us too soon. Hope that you play with your heroes (Jimi, George and the others) in Heaven.

I first heard the music of TOTO as early as 1983, and immediately loved their music. Bought every record they made. I was at most impressed with the musicianship of the entire band, especially the drumming sounds of Jeff Porcaro...Brilliant, solid, ahead of his time. A true natural talent, and will be noted as one of the greatist, best influential drummers of all time! A "world class musician" I will never forget!

Pureza, alegria, prazer, felicidade e tranquilidade.

The first time I heard the intro groove to "Rosanna" (as a naive young drummer!) I was completely floored! I couldn't believe my ears, that drumming could be SO subtle and SO grooving! I then went on to discover other Toto "Jeffisms" like "Pamela", "These Chains", "Animal"...the list goes on and on! Thank you Jeffrey, thank you for the groove of a lifetime. God Bless you! Your playing has been inspirational to me. Chops, yes. But the groove - the feel. 'Ruby Baby' with Donald Fagen...'Rosanna'....'I keep forgetting'....countless more. Superb. The best. What a loss.
Thank you.

Hello Jeff. You depart this world and time of 13 years has flowed. I still feel loneliness where you are not. It becomes the fan of Toto and 17 years. Your drum is really wonderful. The drum player like you will not show up from now on. CD is heard every day. In our mind, wonderful distinguished services that you left will remain indefinitely. And, your soul is to keep living in our mind.
You are not and it is really lonely. Please restfully.

Hey Jeff

I am always thinking on you when I am listening TOTO records. There are so many drummers in this world, but definitely, the best I'll ever hear, was you. This fine feeling and using the sticks was / can never been matched.

I am sorry about never hearing or seeing you live.

Anyhow on Friday 1992 was your day of death - 13 years ago - long time no groove!!!
Maybe we hear and see each other once..
Thank you for the great time and that I (we) can enjoy your music.

13 years...Incredible! I can relive the moment I heard about your passing away, Jeff! It took me some time to realize what a real loss this world suffered and still does...Today I taught my 2 year old son that "Jeff is in Heaven watching over us". You should hear his angel voice saying that! No words can describe what I feel thinking about one of the biggest souls of the 20th century. It's funny, I never met you and still I feel like one of your closest friends! Tonight I'm preparing myself for a special "Jeff night": the Paris live DVD, maybe your drum lesson and some audio stuff with your wizardry. That's what I owe at least to the man that changed my life. YOU are that man, Jeffrey Porcaro and I'll keep your memory alive as long as I shall breathe! Thanks for everything and may God bless your soul, your band mates and your family...Love, Andy.

What a day!

13 years ago the world lost a fine musician and a brilliant drummer .... but he´s not forgotten!

Jeff ... you´ll live forever ... on the wings of time !

I´ll never forget you - thanx for your music and your groove.

You´re one of a kind.

I bought my first Toto-record at the age of 16 and it was "isolation" - what a play! And after that i get "the virus" and i still have it...

Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro will always have a place in my heart!!!

I bought my first TOTO-CD in 2002, since then I'm a big fan! Some weeks ago I got me the Live-DVD from 1990 in France, which was the first time for me to watch Jeff playing live and it was great fun to see him perform and to compare it to Simon's style on the 2003 DVD and at the Leverkusen-Concert(Which was great by the way).
It seems to me that Simon had to be the only
choice to fulfill the gap Jeff left to the band. The two greatest drummers in the world in one band, one in person and one in memory...

All the best to you guys

I remember playing in school bands with Jeff at Milikan Junior High and in garage bands at his parent's home. It was fun to be around him and talk to him with his high energy level and enthusiasm. Not to mention that he always had great players around him and stood out as a great player even in a school band! I was happy to hear about his success in life but very sad to hear about his passing away.

I played drums for about 10-11 growing up in the seventies. I am forty now, and have decided to start playing again (no matter what the wife thinks)She still loves me. I have always been inspired by Jeff's playing, and was deeply saddened when he passed away. I still vividly remember the day when I heard it on the news. Since getting back into playing, the first groove I am learning is the shuffle groove from Roseanna. There is an excellent video of Jeff showing how he created that groove on the Drummer World website. Awesome...
Good to see Toto is still going strong !!!!

At 40 years of age I'm just about to embark on my first drum lessons, something I've wanted to do all my life. I'll start with the easy stuff, the Stones, April Wine, the usual. In a few years, when I think I'm ready, it'll be time to try a few Jeff Porcaro rhythms. That will be the ultimate goal for me - to imitate some of Jeff's unique, musical, technically challenging work behind a drum kit. I can't wait to embark on my journey!

Hi Folks,
I just want to say that Jeff was (and still is) the most musical Drummer of all time.
I am a drummer myself and it is very sad, that I have never seen him playing live, because I´m too young. Jeff you´re still the man!! There´s no replacement for you!! (O.K. There is Simon Phillips. One of the greatest Drummer of our time! But... You know what I mean!)
But, Toto, I´m very happy to tell you that I have Tickets for your show in Leverkusen, my hometown. I´ve heard that the Steve Lukather-Gig has been cancelled. Our local government is cancelling a lot of shows, because the neighbours always say it´s to loud! F*** that!!! At last there is something happen around that boring town and almost everybody complains!!
But none of that matters, as long TOTO is playing!! And if anyone´s complaining about that night, I´ll move out of this City (probably ;-) )
So long. I see you at the show.
Jeff you´re the Shuffle-God!! We´ll miss you!

Each time I hear Jeff's grooves, I realize, more and more, what a shame it is that he's gone. His work is unprecedented. His drums on Steely Dan's 'Gaucho' are ULTIMATE.

Lunch period, Grant High School, Van Nuys California, Spring of 1972: I have to get to the outdoor stage area quickly...Jeff and the guys are playing live again today! Even then, Jeff's drums stood out and I believe everyone had the same feeling of being in the presence of incredible talent. And yes, I felt very fortunate to hear him and know him...he was one of those true nice guys. I watched his career unfold with sheer delight and proudly reminisced about those incredible Spring of '72 lunch break sessions with anyone and everyone within an earshot of a Toto song. Yes, he departed much too soon, but Jeff left a brilliant, indelible mark, unmatched to this day, on the music scene and in the hearts and minds and souls (and ears!) of all those that he touched. No, I was not just fortunate...I was truly blessed to have known him. God bless you, Jeff Porcaro...I look forward to leafing through the old yearbook with you.

My brother and I grew up as drumming students, and almost gave it away after hearing Jeff. every thing he eer did behind a kit was pure brillance! We judged our skill level, on whether we could do what any other drummer did.... Some of his rudements and rolls are still a mystery to us after some 35 years collectivly in front of the skins. We still love and miss him. No one comes close, and maybe never will. We love you Jeff, keep bangin away up there, and keep 'em all entertained.

Forgot to say this: Jeff, you're the one, the inspiration, everything that is good about music. Hope you somehow can understand how great your contribution to music is, how many you have inspired to enjoy music as it should be enjoyed, how many you have helped to see what the real thing is. You will always be the best, and I'm sure that every man on earth is with me when I say Thanks for not only opening the door, but also showing the way. We musicians will always see you in the horizont where you stans pointing to where the next wonderboy-drummer will explore. I know you rest in peace Jeff!

I just wanted to say that Jeff has left something so important to the music world. No one lives forever but when a musician dies, he becomes a legend. So in that and many other ways he's going to be among us til we join him. However it gives me sort of a creepy feeling to listen to his magic one-of-a-kind grooves and knowing I can't meet him and give my worship. But still it feels good to know that I'm gonna jam with Mr. Porcaro in heaven for all eternity. Peace to all you guys and hope you all feel the same happiness for Jeff as I do, though he can only watch us and smile. Love, Simon

The intro to Rosanna has to be one of the most recognizable drum intros in music. He was such as solid drummer. Such a shame he's not with us today :(

Well....where can I begin?! Jeff played with a sense of musicianship that very few possess! He not only was a drummer but a superior musician! I go way back listening to Jeff....But my favorite piece that I listen to all the time still. Is Stevie Wonder's "Isnt She Lovely" played by Lee Ritnenour and Bill Champlain! On the Captain Fingers album. The "feel" on the track is just words cannot describe it....Just AWESOME! The pocket was SO BIG that EVERYONE FELL INTO IT!!!
And of course the "Rosanna" track....Jeff is number #1 in my book! And when I play I try to play up to the standard that Jeff has created....But that is a very TALL TASK!!!
A belated Thank You to Jeff for all the GREAT Music that he left us!!!!
God Bless You Jeff! We all miss you!!

As a kid I danced to the Music of TOTO and Jeff's drumming, those amazing shuffle beats and layered melodies. Now a songwriter/performer, I had the unique opportunity to record my 3rd CD at Jeff's old studio in LA, which still continues the tradition of producing great music. You can feel the amazing creative energy there in the walls. For me, this is clearly a sign that his legacy still 'passes it on' to younger musicians, and that is beautiful. That's what it's all about. I captured a tribute record for my decesed father there at Jeff's old studio that I'm very proud of. His illness was the catalyst for my music. In short, to live every moment I can. So Jeff, here's to you. Cheers.

Jeff - you are Toto to us. And we're thankful for the time we had you, even though it was brief. Bless you.

Tremendous thanks to Simon Phillips who stepped up to the challenge, and gave Toto all the more reason to continue. Jeff, you are sorely missed, but your legacy will go on.

See you all soon,

There is no other drummer I have known that have that kind of PASSION abouth The Rythm that Jeff had. He had a GLUE between the notes no other drummer can copy and was The Best. I don`t find technically drummers so very interesting because "everyone" can disiplin himself and be as good as Dave Weckl, Simon Phillips or Vinnie Colaiuta, it`s just a matter of time, but when one comes to Jeff`s GROOOVES, who can stand still? He had a talent, a God-given one. My dear son Marcus was born 4 aug 1992, one day before Jeff passed away. I have now bought a Yamaha HipGig set to him and he is already a fan of Jeff`s playing. We listen to Toto, Al Jarreay (Breaking away), Don Henley (New York Minute) and even Russ Taff (Shake) where he plays only hi-hat (!). One can recognice Jeff at once. Even it is 13 years ago he passed away we feel that we still miss him and our thoughts and prayers goes to his wife, his children and family. Bless U all and Bless U other guys in the Tot family. We feel one with U.

Jeff Porcaro was my godfather. I don't really have many memories of him, but i know that he was a major part in my life. I have the pictures to prove that. But when i think about him and his life, i think about him playing the drums and living a great life. It's a shame that his life was cut short, but he's in Heaven and will be waiting for all of us Toto fans when we get there.

I've been a fan since before the debut when the players played for Boz Scaggs on "Silk Degrees." Each player was, and is, very precise in their performances. I could always place Jeff's performances in recordings. He had a distinct style and intricacy matched by no one else. I finally got to see the band live in Austin, Texas during the "Hydra" tour. Each member blew me away. Of course, I couldn't keep my eyes off of Jeff's performance. He did things that other bands would need two drummers to accomplish. I measure the talent of a drummer from the "yardstick" left by Jeff, and I have to say, many fall short.

I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of Jeff's passing. It felt as if I had lost a family member. I will always remember Jeff , especially on April 1. Bro, I love you and miss you still.

In Summer 1992 I was in Corsica, a mediterranean island. The day I decided to travel back home I called may parents, that I gonna be home the next day. My mother was on the phone and she said, that Jeff Porcaro died. I stood there in the phone booth on a market place, the sun was shining and everything around me was no longer existing at this moment. I stood there for a while and said nothing, felt -still feel- a great loss. An old pal of mine and I -both drummers- miss him very very much. (We met Mr. Joe Porcaro at the Tribute for Jeff in 2002). His work didn´t end there, it lives forever on the wings of my time.

Hi Jeff, you were and still are my main man as a drummer. I've spent this whole week-end reliving the good days of my youth back ind high-scholl by listening to my TOTO records.
You were the reason why I spent days and nights in my little soundproof studio with my exact replica of your drumkit, trying to get behind all your famous beats - what can I say.. You rocked my world back then and you still can when I listen to your music.

Now I've quit being a musician and I am pursuing another carreer but listening to you and your fabulous drumming skills it all makes me wanna go back in time.

You rock!!

only the good die young...!
maybe these words can tell us, why such great artists as jeff had to pass away. he still is an idol for all drummers and for those, who try to get one someday. he created a new generation, he did music nobody did before and he had a rythm-feeling nobody still has yet. and although i'm a singer and guitar player, he was the only reason i tried to learn playing drums. i had no chance. if you meet bon scott in heaven (or hell?) tell him, i cried for him too!

Jeff Porcaro was not only a human metronome, he played with such great grooves on rockin' tunes as well as on ballads. He set his back beat in exactly the right place. He never got in the way, especially on session work. He is by far my favorite session player . . .ever. I still miss him immensely. What a tremendous loss to the music world!

The first song that I heard from Toto was "Hold the Line" at a hospital in Janesville Wisconsin,as a phone installer (1981), and I was hooked ever since. I have the upmost respect for Steve and Co. but Jeff brought crisp and detailed druming.
To me, Jeff defied drum electronics programing. As long you had him around , you'd forget about budget reducing in your songs. We all can agree that he enjoyed jamming , also he would seem like the "Little Drummer Boy" because it was heartfelt.
Jeff , you have left us a legacy of how music should be played.
Thanks Steve, everytime you pause to remember.

I just wanted to drop a few lines about Jeff and Toto. I really enjoy watching the DVD Toto from Past to Present. I also enjoy watching Live in Amsterdam. I just enjoy watching Jeff playing the drums,he seemed to have enjoyed his job. I have also read alot of the tributes made to Jeff, and he really appreciated his fans and to me that just blesses me that he would have appreciated me as well because I am a fan. I also wanted to say to the rest of the band. I saw in the DVD Live in Amsterdam how you signed autographs for your fans, that means alot to me, because it sure is a let down when some bands don't feel it necessary to do that, not that I go to alot of concerts, but bands need to realize that if not for us, they would not be where they are if not for us. I know that alot of times their schedule does not permit them to do so but they should keep that in mind. Thank you Toto, you sound so good when you harmonize together, that was what got me hooked. Keep up the good work!
sincerely your fan

I remember riding the train all night to go see Toto in the middle of North Dakota at a state fair in the 80's. I had never seen them in concert before and wanted to make sure I did. As I sat down, Jeff Porcaro came out drinking a can of Bud. One of the security guys came up and made him throw it out. I went up to him and said "Jeff, I am a huge fan of your music and your playing." He looked me straight in the eye and said "thanks man, that really means alot to hear you say that."

I couldn't believe how humble he was. One of the coolest cats ever. What a loss.

Also, there is an album by a Christain band called Liaison. Jeff played on the entire album. Not my cup of tea from a lyric point of view, but the drums are incredible.

I became a TOTO fan in 1980. The vocals, the versality, one song after the other, they all blew me away. But the one thing that really stood out for me was the drums. Jeff was, in my opinion, the absolute best ever. He had a way of making those drums heard in a song, to the point that you would listen again and again just to hear him play. He is surely missed. I still listen to him almost every single day.

Arthur Marques é guitarrista e produtor muical.

Even though you passed away some years ago (...), you are still everyday with me, because you're still on radio !! Whatever the radio that you tune on, not a single hour passes without playing a song that you performed on !! From Toto to Steely, Springteen to Jackson, Dire Straits to Elton, your groove will remain (the same)...for ever

I will remember Jeff as the greatest drummer this world has ever seen ! His performance
on the Live DVD from Paris in unbelievable.
I never got to see Jeff in real person, have only watched him on his drumclinics and on the Live DVD's, but there is no doubt - Jeff you are the man and you will never be forgotten.

Also my biggest regards to Mr. Simon Phillips
who - even though Jeff can NEVER be replaced - but Simon you are wonderful, and thanks very much for joining the best band in the world.

Take very good care of yourself everyone

Well what can I say about jeff, just that the music world has lost the greatist drummer on the face of this planet, there was nothing or no one that he could,nt play or play with the real tragedy in this whole situation is that he died to young and I myself never got the chance to see him play live, Im sure it would have been one night to remember. I started playing drums at the age of 5 and I am now 40 and toto and jeff have been a great insperation to me and my music career he was truely my Idle the best of the best and someday I would like to see toto come to boston mass. so at least I can see the greatist band that ever lived in honor of THE GREAT JEFF POCARO!!!!!!

I can remember the first time I heard Lowdown by Boz Scaggs. It was such a groovin tune. I was 17 years old at the time and I just had to find out who the drummer was. After awhile I realized that this amazing Time keeper was playing on all my favorite recodings. I am a guitarist who really digs the groove, and for me, although there are many great drummers in the world, Jeff was the most groovin ever. His music lives on through all the great recordings

I have bought your videos CD and one thing I noticed about Jeff is that he really looked like he was having fun and that he enjoyed what he was doing. I really enjoy watching him play the drums.
