Such a shame i haven't seen Jeff playing live but i look up to him as an idol. He's the best drummer i've ever known and to think i'm only 21 years old and i'm a toto fan already. I was shocked when i heard the news that the band has already ended. I was numb for a minute!!! They have great songs that would last for a lifetime. Miss them so much... |

Unfortunately, I am too young to remember Jeff but as a music reviewer I know how much his work and charisma has done for the music today. I am deeply touched by the spirit of Toto's remaining members and how they still, after all these years, cherish the work of a legendary drummer and character. Course a character he most certaintly was! In my musical studies I always bump into other musicians who are sorry for the loss of Jeff.
These are not my memories but my observations - he WAS the band. He was the soul of what made the band beloved among lovers of quality music and still today his work remains the best of the best. What Toto does to me - what Jeff did to me - is not to describe in words.
For what it's worth we are a lot of people out here who remember - and always will. We will keep the memory alive by telling upcoming music lovers about one of the most charismatic and beloved musicians of all times.
Rest in peace - I really hope you've found it. |

As a young recording engineer at Westlake Audio in the mid 80's I had the great fortune of working with Jeff Porcaro. I have vivid memories of not only Jeff's incredible playing and studio chops but also of his sense of humor and soft spoken, easy-going personality.
Jeff would often show up at the studio hours before his downbeat time, get a cup of coffee, sit down behind his kit and roll a fat joint on his floor tom. While having his morning toke I would often be setting up microphones and headphones for the upcoming session and we'd shoot the bull. Jeff would all the while checkout and tune his drumkit and the comfortable vibe he would create was like putting on your favorite pair of jeans and t-shirt... And he always fit into whatever the session called for.
God what a consumate pro. I got to work with L.A.'s best session players in those days and Jeff stood heads above many of the others. As a session drummer he was unmatched. Many of the other great players would put on their "A" Game for sessions with big name, platinum-selling artists but their attitude and playing would often suffer when working with less than stellar "talent," foreign artists, or for that matter music that they personally weren't in to.
Jeff would ALWAYS be a professional's professional. Whether working with major artists like Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson & Roger Waters, a new Japanese artist, or for an advertising jingle, he gave his best. If you hired Jeff to play drums for your session you would always get his "A" game.
What a body of amazing work he has given us as his legacy. Thank you Jeff for touching all of us. Thank you for showing me early in my career what being a true professional was all about. We miss you my friend and you will always live on not only in our hearts but also in every magical beat you played.

I didn't have the pleasure of meeting you, but your son nico is a great kid. He's confident, a talented drummer, and an outgoing guy. He was one of the first people I met at Loomis Chaffee and he is one of the only people there I hope to stay in touch with. You would be very proud of him. |

Yes, Jeff you are still thought of and missed greatly after all of these years! And though Toto no longer physically exists (Best of luck Luke! Enjoy the new tour!), there is a vast catalog of your playing to continue to remind us of how you are on the most tasteful drummers around!
Again, best of luck to all the guys in their future endeavors! Thanks for keeping Toto around and making great music!! |

Dear Jeff and everyody who stops by, I hate to tell you that the band that Jeff Porcaro founded does not exist anymore! Luke made an announcement regarding this sad subject. Check his website! Reading what Steve Lukather is saying about his decision to quit Toto means one sure thing to me: the band started to die the moment Jeff died...I write these lines with tears in my eyes and I know I have to accept Luke's decision. Toto was the best band and it will always be! God bless and thanks for the great records! Jeff, Toto is by your side now! I'll always keep safe your memory and your band's memory! Thank you for everything!
Lots of love,
Andy from Oradea - Romania |
