" [...]back in 1977, all the guys that eventually made up the band TOTO, were heavy L.A. session dudes who played on alot of the albums that came out at that time (Ricki Lee Jones, Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, Eric Carmen, whoever...); they were all in their early 20's and were considered the heavy cats on the music scene; I was introduced to them by a young-kind-of-inexperienced-but-very-talented Canadian producer (who had played piano on my own earlier demos that got me my deal with MCA in 1977) of course everybody knows who David Foster is now........ and together, we all embarked on making my self titled record for MCA; these guys (not including Foster) were also tracking and playing on my record where they were going back and forth from my sessions to Boz's every day.
David Paich and Jeff Porcaro often spoke about trying to record some demos amongst themselves in order to try and get their own record deal as a band, and when they finally tracked the demos, David and Jeff asked me to sing on that one particular track, which I loved.
My earliest roots are in soul and funk music, and during that time in my life, I happened to really like Bozz Scaggs' music from the album with "Lowdown" on it (which David Paich either wrote or co-wrote; in fact, unbeknownst to little old me at the time, he produced that Boz album). I really dug all the songs Jeff and David demoed for the TOTO project at that time and was pleased with having been a part of it; subsequently, the guys got a record deal based on the demos, yet although they re-recorded 1 or 2 songs from those original demos onto their new records for CBS, they never re-recorded "Miss Sun"---at least until the early-to-mid-eighties when Boz was putting together his Best Of record, and asked they guys if he could cut the song; well, they said yes, and I happened to be in town at that time cutting my own record (Drastic Measures), and they asked if I could re-perform my vocals on Boz's recording.
That time in my life had great meaning for me: I was only seventeen, Jeff Porcaro was only the second boyfriend I had ever had, and the rest of the guys really rocked my musical world on all those early basic tracking dates for my record; in fact, Steve Lukather was just a sweet quiet young kid who the guys had become friends with, and my debut record marks the first time in Luke's life that he ever sang on any record ("Daydream"), which I had to coax him into doing, 'cause he kept saying he wasn't a singer!
