DEAVERS, JOHN
When Toto toured the world with "Kingdom of desire" in 1992, Steve Lukather not only played guitar but also did lead-vocals. In order to prepare for this huge strain on his voice, he thoroughly prepares before going on stage:
"The key is to warm up. I have this tape of this guy John Deavers, a vocal coach. [...] There's certain techniques that you can learn from professional
vocal coaches. I never lost my voice in the 60 shows that we did. It was amazing to me. But I warm up properly. It takes me 20 or 25 minutes just to
sing along with this tape while I'm getting dressed. Then I'd play the guitar for 20 minutes, have a beer and shoot the shit, stretch out and I was ready
to go. It's like anything else. It's like playing guitar, man. If you haven't played for a while and you pick it up and you start playing all this stuff,
after a while your muscles feel tight.
