BEATLES, THE
The fab four's 'Meet the Beatles' was Steve Lukather's inspiration to become a rock-star:My father bought me a guitar and a copy of "Meet The Beatles" when I was seven. Just the sound of it overcame my whole soul, if you want to call it that. I knew that's what I wanted to do. I remember George Harrison played a solo in "I Saw Her Standing There" and just the sound of the guitar bending and the reverb struck a nerve inside of me. (interview in "Guitar", 1993)
"I knew then that I wanted to be a rock and roll star, and decided that I never wanted to give up playing." (Guitar Player magazine, April 1984)
First, my parents gave me an acoustic guitar, later on an electric guitar from a supermarket. They found it funny and thought: it's just something temporary, which will pass when he gets older and then he'll learn a trade (interview in "Oor", 1979)
Steve Lukather played on => Michael Jackson's hit ballad with Paul McCartney, "This Girl is Mine." As a result of the Jackson-McCartney session, Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro were invited to fly to London in April 1984 to appear in Paul McCartney's new movie, "Give My Regards to Broadstreet", and play a tune with the former Beatle.
"It was fantastic!" Steve says. "What an honor to be in the same room with him and be able to hang with him and talk. I was picking [Beatles producer] George Martin's brain. It was an unbelievable experience. You won't recognize any of us in the movie. We're all dressed up in wild makeup and wearing wigs."
Steve and Jeff appeared totally in white playing 'Silly Love Songs', which can also be found on the soundtrack.
(Guitar Player magazine, April 1984)
