LEA

"Lea" was not sung by its writer, Steve Porcaro, but by Joseph Williams.

It has been a popular myth among the fans for years that it is Steve on vocals, as they don't sound very much like Joseph at all, but Steve Porcaro had this to say to Toto Legend:

When Joseph left the band, it expecially hurt me because I'd finally found a guy who could sing my songs. Part of the reason I don't think I had so many songs on Toto records is because I always felt like I had to sing my songs. Lukather was too Lukather and Paich was Paich, and the lead singer had too many chops.

But with Joseph, I had a guy who could sing "Lea!" I had done a vocal on "Lea" and it was excruciating, painful! I was in the studio and it was a nightmare. But I finally did it, and we were gonna put it on the record. Then Joseph came in the band and I had him listen to the way I did the song and I said, "Okay now, you try it." He went in there and he nailed it for me. I was so thankful that we finally had a lead singer who could sing my songs.
